After Anna by Alex Lake
The real nightmare starts when her daughter is returned…
"A girl is missing. Five years old, taken from outside her school. She has vanished, traceless. The police are at a loss; her parents are beyond grief. Their daughter is lost forever, perhaps dead, perhaps enslaved. But the biggest mystery is yet to come: one week after she was abducted, their daughter is returned. She has no memory of where she has been. And this, for her mother, is just the beginning of the nightmare." (goodreads)

After Anna has had my attention for a while now and I decided that I really needed a good mystery book that I cannot figure out. I love (murder) mysteries and horror but what I did not expect was for this book to actually scare me. The aspect of child abduction got to me in a horrible way that was unsettling throughout the novel. I watch Criminal Minds and have not been overly affected by child abductions until now, it just didn't sit right with me while reading the book I actually felt panicked.
Although I did enjoy this book it was not what I expected. I found the plot rather easy to figure out early on which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I did want more of a challenging mystery. I also still do not know how I feel about the main character, Anna's mother, Julia. I felt for her throughout the novel as Anna was abducted, returned and going through the horrors that she did. Yet I still did not seem to like her much as a person. She handled things in a selfish, complicated way and felt she definitely could have made some better decisions about her relationship with Brian.
I LOVED that the author adds in chapters from the abductor's perspective. This really added to the story, to get into the mind of the messed up person who abducted Anna really was.
Despite the few issues I mentioned having with this book, I actually did really enjoy it. There was a lot of worry and suspense and the story was actually very well thought out and written.
I would recommend After Anna and I do look forward to starting Alex Lake's other books in the near future.
My Rating: 4/5 Stars
