"Wylie may have escaped the camp in Maine, but she is far from safe. The best way for her to protect herself is to understand her ability, fast. But after spending a lifetime trying to ignore her own feelings, giving in to her ability to read other peoples’ emotions is as difficult as it is dangerous.
And Wylie isn’t the only one at risk. Ever since they returned home, Jasper has been spiraling, wracked with guilt over what happened to Cassie. After all they’ve been through together, Wylie and Jasper would do anything for each other, but she doesn’t know if their bond is strong enough to overcome demons from the past.
It is amid this uncertainty and fear that Wylie finds herself confronted with a choice. She was willing to do whatever it took to help Cassie, but is she prepared to go to the same extremes to help complete strangers . . . even if they are just like her?" (goodreads)
This second book wastes no time jumping back into the story! It picks up immediately where we left off in The Outliers. I was a little nervous about this book before starting it. I really loved the first book and seem to find a lot in teen books that the second book in a trilogy has middle book syndrome. Basically what that means is that its a bridging book, the first book sets up the story, the second kind of just doesn't have a whole lot going on and usually just makes a path for the third book to have all the action and then conclude.
This was NOT the case for this book. The Scattering was a perfect follow up to The Outliers and I loved this book just as much, if not MORE.
Being able to understand more what Wylie is dealing with help navigate her emotions and actions a lot better, I feel I understand her way more as a character and she definitely feels the same way about herself that way too.

Wylie's journey in this book was so action packed and she took the route I wanted to see for her. I really hope we see more of some of these new characters in book three and get more storylines from them although I love that this series is strictly from Wylie's perspective. I wouldn't be able to trust anyone else's point of view, or their motives. I do trust very little people in Wylie's life, not from a particular reason, just based on my own non Outlier feelings. I can say without spoiling anything because it is solely a personal opinion that other than Wylie I ONLY trust Jasper and Rachel. Rachel is a very interesting character and I think she could go either way at this point but I do trust her to be on Wylie's side, which is more that I can say for everyone else. It is clear that Rachel has some explaining to do but for Wylie I think her dislike for Rachel is making her instantly jump to the worst possible conclusion.
THE ENDING FLOORED ME.
The last chapter of the book left me speechless and was something I NEVER would have expected. I salute you for that Kimberly McCreight, because I am a hard person to through off. But that ending made me begging for more and set up a quite interesting direction for book three. I cannot wait to get my hands on it already, it has definitely made one of my TOP anticipated novels for 2018 (assuming that is the year book three is released).
The Outliers Series:
Book 1: The Outliers
Book 2: The Scattering
Book 3: The Collide
My Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
