Spoiler Review: We Can Be Mended
This is a spoiler review for We Can Be Mended: An Allegiant Epilogue by Veronica Roth. This was a pre-order bonus gift when you submitted your receipt for Carve the Mark to the publishers.
If you have not read the Divergent series, please note this review will contain spoilers from the last book in the trilogy, Allegiant. If you do not want to read spoilers for We Can Be Mended please stop reading now.
"We Can Be Mended is a short-story epilogue that focuses on Four and takes places five years after Allegiant, the conclusion of the Divergent series." (goodreads)
I have not done a review on any books from the Divergent series (even though I plan to eventually). So before I start this review I want to make two things clear:
First, Divergent is my favorite series, I love it to no end. I even have my own version of Tris bird tattoo, one bird (3 total) for each member of my family that I got when I moved out on my own.
Second, I accepted Tris's death. I have gotten into some discussions about this over the years but yes, I accept it. However, I have issues with the reasoning behind her death and have a major issue with something else in the ending that was very much confirmed in this epilogue. I plan on doing a full review on The Allegiant Ending soon.
We Can Be Mended could not have been more of a disappointment. After this review I am going to place it in the back of Four and pretend it doesn't exist.
WHY VERONICA.
You lost a lot of fans when you killed Tris, which like I said I accept and there are a number of us out there but the majority were not happy with this decision. If you read this VRoth, please, for your fans, include an alternate ending where SHE LIVES in an anniversary edition. You broke our hearts in Allegiant and this epilogue was like a spit in the face.
If you didn't receive the 33 page short-story, here is a recap of what you missed:
- It's five years later.
- Four, Christina, Zeke, Shauna, and Caleb all still live in Chicago.
- The Dauntless compound is kind of like a museum.
- Cara and Matthew are getting married, they live in Philadelphia.
- Zeke and Shauna want to try to have a baby.
- Four still has 4 fears but they are different than in the series; flying in a plane that runs out of fuel, immobile as a dark force, usually David or Marcus and attacks the ones he cares most for, he is in pain and has to suffer, and last, Tris dies.
- He is almost out of serum and fears what will happen when he cannot know his own fears. He wants to know when he has moved on from Tris.
- Four and Christina are a couple.
FUMING.
It was always hinted that Four and Christina maybe got together at the end of Allegiant, but I liked to think that they became friends over their love for Tris and to mourn her together. Them getting together felt like the biggest slap in the face. Putting aside the facts that I hated Christina throughout the series, they do not seem compatible AT ALL. It feels like such a betrayal to Tris, yes I understand Four has to move on but why with Christina, Tris's best friend. It also makes her death seem cheap. Like the idea for Four and Christina was ENDGAME(!?) and how can Tris get out of the picture to make that happen. It never could have happened if she was alive, if they broke up and then he got together with Christina. I think that would have lost even more fans, including me. But I cannot accept this relationship. I wish it wasn't real and I am going to live in my pretend world where they are friends and nothing more.
I could go on and on about how much I disapprove of this but Four needs to learn how to accept Tris's death and he does need to move on from the pain it brings him. Tris shouldn't be a painful memory. He should say her name out loud instead of saying "she". He should accept he may always love her and live with that knowledge. Christina tells him to move on but the death of someone you love isn't something you move on from. Yes he was young but age doesn't matter, the love was there and the pain of death affects everyone. You don't "move on" from death, you learn to live with it and it gets easier as time passes. Four needs to let go of her death, as a fear, and remember their relationship and memories.
And Four should not be with Christina, the end.

I totally agree and i appreciate and love Veronica Roth but when she killed Tris i died a little inside i got heart broken and i do not agree with four and Christina together i do believe four should move on and be happy but Christina come on but i totally understand and respect that but one of the reasons i kept on reading the divergent series was because of Tris and four and there chemistry but it was a nice plot twist i guess.

DeleteI was actually thinking on reading this series,sence I'm on the last book of the Twilight Saga,Breaking Dawn. I did watch the first movie of Divergent and enjoyed it. But knowing now this is the sad and sickening ending I mite not read it. I mite read the Hunger Games series first and maybe then decided to read the Divergent series. Or I mite just lay in bed crying about Breaking Dawn because of it being over,(at least there isn't a sad ending so I mite live)Or maybe I'll just stick to episode fantasy stories. But whatever I decided, I hope I don't die from sadness.

ReplyDeleteI am not a writer, but being they had all of this technology she could have still changed the ending and written another book. The person that died was a clone and Tris has been held captive afive. For the past 5years. Sorry but Christina has to go hook up with someone else. Why not let him and all of us be happy? Just my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI understand why Veronica Wroth had Tris die, but it would have been nice if she had an alternative ending, so that everyone could see a happy ending. I am still sad about Tris dying, but the message for Tobias from Christina in the end of Allegiant is all something we can remember. When I feel sad about Tris dying I just read fanfictions of where she is alive and doesn't die.

ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the Divergent series, but I cried for 2 weeks straight after I read that Tris died, and when I read what Four went through in the weeks that followed. I haven't read We Can be Mended, but I need to, now, because I retched when I saw that Four and Christina are a couple. That is absolutely sick. Tris was the best thing in those books, and now that she is gone, Four is the best, but he cannot dishonor her by shacking up with Christina, especially because she was her best friend, and that Four didn't like her at the beginning of Dauntless initiation!!

ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of Tris death at all, it still hurts, seems unfair and I do not agree with the reason behind it. I imagined Four being happy... But single. Like, learning to move on with the people he loves but single, I don't know why I always pictured him like that, but he seems like that kind of charachter that doesn't need a couple, and that if he had wouldit just ruin his charachter (cofcofleovaldezcofcof). Trust me, I know plenty of people who had a full happy life next to their family and loved ones (my grandma included) And that's the life I saw for Tobias. bUT HE AND CHRISTINA?! I MEAN, I LIKE CHRISTINA, BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. JUST WHY?! I EXPECT NOTHING AND THEY STILL FIND A WAY TO DISAPPOINT ME!! You, whoever wrote this, I agree with you. I think everyone has a different stand about Tris's death, but I agree that they would have ended up better as friends mourning someone they loved than friends who going turned to lovers. I can't imagine what she would feel seeing this from above. She would be heartbroken. This can't happen. I'm going to pretend this didn't happen. I'm going to pretend Tris didn't die. End of story.
DeleteWHYYYYYYYY!?!?!?! It took me a long time to accept Tris's death. I didn't accept it just so Four and Christina could get together! I was kind of hoping he wouldn't get over her death but move on in life, BUT ON HIS OWN! And then there's Christina, telling him to get over her death, you can't just DO that. Christina and Tobias have NOTHING in common. NOTHING! Sure, they both lost Tris, but that is it. Imagine how Tris would feel if she was still alive. I was kind of hoping for the possibility that she was still alive and there would be an actual 4th book. Like maybe she didn't fully die because of the serums and was just unconscious and she wakes up and finds Four. Of course that can't actually happen though. Four should've just been killed off. Maybe he commits suicide or something because he can't get over her death. At least they would've died together. I would've been sad about both of their deaths, but ultimately happy that they can find peace together in another world. The ending of Allegiance and We Can Be Mended was pretty fucked up. Absolutely hated it. Just why, why Why, Why, WHYYYYYYY!
