1. Sierra's family heavily depends on families buying Christmas trees from their lot. How many in the group still buy real Christmas trees? Those who still do, how many of buy their Christmas tree from a lot?

 

 

2. For a sixteen year old girl, Sierra is very sure of what she wants and doesn't want from a relationship. Speaking from her head and not her heart, how does Sierra's opinions on love in the first few chapters of the book match or mismatch you're romantic life at sixteen?

 

 

3. As the story goes on, the relationship with Heather and Devon becomes increasingly more awkward. Do you think Heather is doing the right things prolonging the breakup? Or is she all talk and no action? How does your views on Heather and Devon's relationship change from the beginning of the novel to the end?

 

 

4. Sierra is allowing herself to fall for Caleb without consulting in the rumors. Based on the circumstances of the rumor, do you think she should bring it up herself or allow Caleb to tell her the truth once he is ready? Do you think it was fair for Heather to fuel Sierra's head with those rumors without knowing if they were true?

 

 

5. What was your reaction to Caleb's story? If you were Abby, would you be able to forgive him? If you were Sierra, would you be able to understand and accept his past?

 

 

6. How did you feel when Sierra confronted Jeremiah? Do you think she was out of line? How do you think Caleb would react if he found out about the conversation?

 

 

7. What are your thoughts on the fight between Sierra and her friends back home? Do you think they were being fair or unfair? Explain.

 

 

8. What is the reason for the book title? Do you think this title is better than the previous title attempts: "A String of Lights", "A Lot of Christmas", "The Eve of Everything"?

 

 

9. Discuss the ending of What Light. How do you feel things were left between Sierra and Caleb? How do you think Sierra's family will feel not going back to California next Christmas? Do you hope for a companion novel from Jay Asher on Sierra and Caleb?
