The Call by Peadar O'Guilin

I would describe The Call as The Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins) meets the Darkest Part of the Forest (Holly Black).

Thousands of years ago, humans banished the Sidhe's from Ireland to the Grey Lands.
As punishment, sometime during your humans teenage years, you will be called. In the Grey Lands you will awake, with 24 hours to keep yourself alive, or face the wrath of the Sidhe's.
Nessa has always believed she would survive her call, training at a school for survival for most of her adolescent life.
Everyone else knows she won't survive, but Nessa isn't going to let a minor setback like being crippled be her downfall.
Who will survive the Call?

I read the goodreads description of this book so I started reading with a vague understand of what to expect. However, it starts a little confusing. I feel I was placed in a random point in Nessa's life where I'm expected to know what it going on with the Calls and who these people in her life are/ her history with them. The writing didn't seem to flow and I found myself confused as it jumps around but kept pushing through hoping to make it to the scary parts of Nessa's Call.
However, I was interested enough to keep reading and I'm glad I did. The writing style grows on you as you get further into the story and you begin to start rooting for certain characters during their Call. The chapters in the Grey Lands were the most enjoyable part of this book for me. It was so deranged and creepy but you couldn't look away. The Sidhe are ruthless and definitely have a sick sense of humor when it comes to punishing humans.
I don't want to talk too much about the ending (or ruin who dies/ is still alive at this point) but it is definitely a shit show!

Overall, I enjoyed this book and would love to read more from this author, especially anything else involving the Grey Lands!

Book 2: Currently Untitled

My Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
