Fairest by Marissa Meyer

Fairest is a prequel to The Lunar Chronicles Series, and this review may contain spoilers from the first book of the series, Cinder.
 
I was told by a few people its best to read Fairest after the third book, Cress, because it is suppose to be a very good build up for the fourth and final book in the series, Winter. This I have found from personal experience to be true, but I read Fairest after the first book, Cinder, and I'm very glad I did.


Levana is a main character throughout the series; the evil villain as she is based on the Evil Queen from the fairytale Snow White. Since Cinder does not speak from Queen Levana's point of view, I found myself a few times questioning her motives, her reasoning for things, and wishing I could get inside her head. Fairest gives you all the answers you've ever had about Levana, including her hatred for mirrors. Starting from the death of her parents in her childhood, Levana explains her life growing up on The Moon. The relationship she had with her sister Channary, the devastating "accident" with Princess Selene, and how Princess Winter fits into the Blackburn Royal family. The best thing about this prequel is that I did not feel sympathy for Levana. Sure her childhood upbringing wasn't the greatest but she has done some really unforgivable things, and I finished this book hating her even more.
Queen Levana is a perfect villain in The Lunar Chronicles and I cannot wait to keep reading and find out what happens to her as I close in on the end of the series.

Wonderland: The Queen of Hearts vs. Red Queen

One of my biggest pet peeves regarding Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is the common confusion with The Queen of Hearts and Red Queen. Between the 1951 Disney version as well as the Disney live action movies, they confuse many characteristics and as much as I love all the movies it is a little annoying.   Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is my favorite book and have read it several times over the years. However I've actually once read Through the Looking Glass twice, and my memory on it isn't as good as the first story.
