Joyland Illustrated Edition by Stephen King

"Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever." (goodreads)

This is going to be a tough review to write since I finished Joyland in May.
Joyland was not what I expected from a Stephen King novel but I did enjoy it. It is one in a series called Hard Case Crime, each novel in the series wrote by various authors. The illustrations were so fun, I always like a good illustrated edition. The pictures looked like sketches which were in black and white. It gave the impression that someone was drawing from memory, moments that seemed significant to the mystery surrounding Joyland.

Joyland was a coming of age story for Devin Jones. It was also a ghost mystery story. It felt very Scooby-Doo, with the kids of the park trying to solve a murder case that took place at an amusement park. It was thrilling at times, but wasn't the most interesting read. I loved when Devin was looking into the murder mystery but did not overly care about his social and dating life. It was the murder of Linda Gray and expecting the crime to be solved that solely kept my interest.

Devin is a pretty relatable character, I just personally was more into the mystery. Devin accepts a job at Joyland after his college girlfriend breaks his heart. A summer of mystery, friendship and heroism is on the horizon for Devin.

I wasn't too surprised with the identity of Linda Gray's killer. It was my second suspect, the first being the same person Devin thought was behind the murder. The ending was exciting and reminded me a lot of Zombieland, which was very enjoyable.

Joyland is a great book to recommend to someone who is interested in reading Stephen King but not interested in horror. It was a bit predictable but an overall enjoyable mystery read. I haven't looked into any other Hard Case Crime novels but I think I should.
