"When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown's sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf (Bigby Wolf), to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber." (goodreads)
This was a really fun graphic novel to read, especially since I had some background already with Fabletown. I'm a huge fan of telltale games so I had played The Wolf Among Us before even knowing about these graphic novel series! (Telltale makes a bunch of awesome "choose your own adventure" type games where your decisions affect the outcome of the story. The most popular telltale game being The Walking Dead).
In this first volume, Red Rose has been murdered and her sister, Snow White, brings the case to the attention of Bigby Wolf. Together they try to track down the killer while also keeping each other at arm's length. It was so much fun seeing different fairytale stories come into this world and how they are all working together in the modern world. The mystery of Red Rose was also like playing a game of detective, it was so much fun to figure out and the clues are definitely there to point you in the right direction, if you look hard enough!
Fabletown is such a fun world and the characters are already all so familiar that it is easy to get pulled into the story.
Overall I loved this first volume and even though there are a lot of volumes in this series I hope to eventually read them all. Instead of listing all 25 volumes in the series section like I usually would do, you can click on the link to bring up the series on goodreads.
I highly recommend Fables Volume 1 to fans of the video game The Wolf Among Us, as well as any fans of fairytale stories. My personal favorite angle was Prince Charming's story, which you get a glimpse at in this first volume!
