* I  received an advanced reader copy of this book from Penguin Random House in exchange for an honest review. *

"The horror
is closer
than you think

It's been almost a year since Makani Young came to live with her grandmother is landlocked Nebraska, and she's still adjusting to her new life. And still haunted by her past in Hawaii.

Then, one-by-one, the students of Osborne High begin to die in a series of gruesome murders, each with increasing and grotesque flair. As the terror grows closer and the hunt intensifies for the killer, Makani will be forced to confront her own dark secrets." (back cover of advanced copy)

SCREAM meets YA was enough of a description that made me NEED to get my hands on this book. So when I got an advanced copy from Penguin Teens I couldn't wait to dive into my first Stephanie Perkins book. As a horror lover, especially slashers, I was trilled to get a head start on this highly anticipated horror book from a romance author.

I was really conflicted about this book. I really loved the gruesome murders and the horror it spread among the characters, the school and even the small town in Nebraska. But honestly, I didn't care for a the romance. It was like reading a gushy romance book and a murder mystery all in one and the teeny relationship took away from the horror a bit.

The first murder was amazing. I thought it was setting up a great slasher book, and it got even more exciting when we got the details of it later at school, but sadly it failed to deliver. The murders got less exciting as the story went on, and the romance continued to grow, which I just wasn't a fan of.

I wasn't a huge fan of the characters in this book. Makani and Ollie were a bore, the only trill to Ollie being that he always had the dirty details of the murder cases. Darby and Alex were very interesting but not involved as much as I wanted them to be. Grandma Young on the other hand was hysterical. I absolutely loved her from her introduction of watching SCANDAL on Netflix. She was witty and sassy and just like Makani I was always wondering what she would possibly say next.

As I trudged through the semi boring life of Makani and her relationship with Ollie I couldn't stop wondering who would be the next victim. Maybe it would be a character we just met in passing at school, who was mentioned once insignifically until they were murderer, or maybe a character we hadn't even met yet. What if it was one of Makani's friends!? Did the murders have any connection to Makani? The horror parts of this novel alone is what keeping me going with this book.

The whole story revolved around two major mysteries, the first being Makani's past in Hawaii. When this story finally came out I was shocked. It was so boring! There could have been a lot more done with it and I think the suspense leading to it was bigger than the secret itself. It didn't seem as huge as the hype which was a little disappointing. The second was the killer's motive/ identity which again were both a bust. The killer was identified earlier in the story than I expected. The killer's identity wasn't satisfying at all and the motive was even worse.

Unfortunately this book just wasn't for me, but I do think younger teens, who want to get into the horror gene might enjoy this book a lot. And even though I wasn't a huge fan of the romance half I think this book will do well for teens. It breaks up those scary, murderous parts with something more light and fluffy.

This is a great book for anyone interested in trying out something on the scarier side for the Halloween season. Fans of Stephanie Perkins will enjoy this book and recommended for fans of MTV's SCREAM.

My Rating: 2.5/5 Stars
