Emma in the Night by Wendy Walker

"Two sisters vanish.
Only one comes back."

"One night three years ago, the Tanner sisters disappeared: fifteen-year-old Cass and seventeen-year-old Emma. Three years later, Cass returns, without her sister Emma. Her story is one of kidnapping and betrayal, of a mysterious island where the two were held. But to forensic psychiatrist Dr. Abby Winter, something doesn't add up. Looking deep within this dysfunctional family Dr. Winter uncovers a life where boundaries were violated and a narcissistic parent held sway. And where one sister's return might just be the beginning of the crime." (goodreads)

As Cass slowly gives us the story about what happened to her and her sister Emma in the three years since their disappearance leading up to the reason Cass returned alone, Cass also explores the life and war inside the Martin house and how the events of the past created their future.

As we get parts from Cass of the disturbing things that took place in the Martin home, we begin to question everyone for being behind the disappearance of Emma and Cass, including Cass herself. As parts of Cass's story don't add up, Dr. Abby Winter begins to question why Cass is leading them to pointless dead ends and doubts her trust in her story altogether.

This is a psychological thriller you won't want to put down until the end. It will leave you questioning everyone's motives and loyalties. At the end, you'll be shocked at the secrets people can keep and the lies they get away with telling. This is more than a story about two missing girls, but understanding their life before they vanished.

What are your theories about what happened to Emma?

One thing is definitely certain, Judy Martin is not the only toxic person in this family.

This book is a perfect reads for fans looking for that next thrill since The Woman in Cabin 10 and Behind Closed Doors.

My Rating: 4/5 Stars
