Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo

Wonder Woman: Warbringer is an original story by Leigh Bardugo.
If you are expecting this book to be a representation of the new Wonder Woman 2017 movie, please note that they are both different, original stories.

* I received an advanced reader copy of this book from Indigo Books & Music Inc. in exchange for an honest review.

"Diana longs to prove herself to her legendary warrior sisters. But when the opportunity finally comes, she throws away her chance at glory and breaks Amazon law—risking exile—to save a mere mortal. Even worse, Alia Keralis is no ordinary girl and with this single brave act, Diana may have doomed the world.

Alia just wanted to escape her overprotective brother with a semester at sea. She doesn’t know she is being hunted. When a bomb detonates aboard her ship, Alia is rescued by a mysterious girl of extraordinary strength and forced to confront a horrible truth: Alia is a Warbringer—a direct descendant of the infamous Helen of Troy, fated to bring about an age of bloodshed and misery.

Together, Diana and Alia will face an army of enemies—mortal and divine—determined to either destroy or possess the Warbringer. If they have any hope of saving both their worlds, they will have to stand side by side against the tide of war." (goodreads)

This was the first Leigh Bardugo book I've ever read and I definitely will be looking into her other series in the future.

Also, I have never really been into superheroes, unless Sailor Moon counts. As cliché as it sounds I was always a Disney Princess kind of girl.
My best friend really wanted to see Wonder Woman in theatres and didn't have anyone to go with, everyone had either already seen it or didn't want to. It wasn't a movie I was dying to see but I agreed to go with her anyways. I didn't really have any background knowledge of Wonder Woman and went into that movie with a no expectations. I fell in love in Diana. I went home from that movie in a buzz and couldn't pick up Warbringer any faster.

Warbringer was different than I thought it would be. I think people may have similar expectations that the movie that was just released with Gal Gadot (who was literally flawless) and Warbringer will go hand in hand, which isn't the case. They are completely different stories and both equally amazing.

Diana's character in Warbringer was pretty relatable. She was really unsure of herself and trying to find her place in her world among the Amazons. She always felt there was something to prove to herself, her mother, and sisters. The journey she took upon herself showed a lot about her character and how good a person she is.

The story itself was an emotional roller coaster. Warbringer was so action packed and every page was like biting fingernails wondering what could possibly go wrong next. It was an amazing story of friendship, redemption and heroism. The ending was so unexpected it was like a punch in the gut. It was like a snowball, once they were almost in the clear is just spiraled completely out of control it was beginning to seem impossible Diana and her friends would be victorious. I remember physically crying at one point. I remember the book ending and even though the story concluded itself I wasn't ready to say goodbye to these characters. It was emotional knowing this was their end. I need a follow up. This is a story you will really invest in.

Wonder Woman is a character that will be apart of my life from now on.
Whether you are a fan of Wonder Woman herself, Leigh Bardugo, or both, this story is so heartwarming, gut wrenching, even a little humorous at times, and I recommend it highly.
