One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

This story is way more than Who Kill Simon. There are lies, secrets, and drama, a recommended read for fans of Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl and TV's Riverdale.

"One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.

Pay close attention and you might solve this.
On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon's dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?

Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them." (goodreads)

"Pay close attention and you might solve this." I thought I was so smart to figure out WHAT happened to Simon so early on. McManus was right, there were clues, and if you picked up on them it became more and more obvious. But there was more to this murder mystery than even I predicted. Can you even trust your main characters?

One of Us is Lying POV changes between the four main murder suspects: Bronwyn, Addy, Nate, and Cooper. The more I got to know these characters the more I felt bad for them and liked them, each story was really interesting. As the secrets started coming out, everyone instantly becomes a suspect. It seemed like EVERYONE had a reason for killing Simon, but which secret was the most destroying...

Did one of the four students kill Simon? They were the last people to see him alive and it seems his death could have been easily avoided. Plus there is the fact that they all had something important to lose, something that Simon was going to expose and ruin their reputation. Was it one of them, or a group effort? Are they being framed? Or was Simon's death just that, an accident?

Like I said, I did in fact guess what happened to Simon correctly, everything else was a surprising shock. There is more than just what happened to Simon, but also the why, the reasoning behind his death. I could almost completely say half way through that I knew who it was, but as the why reasons started falling into place I was completely thrown off. I could not have predicted something so sinister from the beginning. This book is going to be a big deal. It's something people are going to talk about. The fear of the reality. This is the world we live in. It makes you realize you don't know people as well as you think you do.

If you are a fan of Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, or TV's Riverdale, I highly recommend checking out One of Us is Lying

This is an addicting mystery with so many plot twists hitting you all at once. This is definitely going to be a book people talk about. I really look forward to reading what McManus writes in the future.

My Rating: 4/5 Stars
